South Ballina beach
« on: Sat 4 Apr 11:05 2020 »
*Sorry in advance to those who can no longer cross the border to enjoy the beach *
Now with all the Qld drivers off the beach, and permits almost a dead cert' to come into effect for all wanting to drive  on the sand, the fishing has been most respectable.
'Took the kids down at dusk a few nights ago to see if we could score a feed of sweet fillets on the good old wriggler worms...BINGO! ...a few lost small dart, but a very good show of whiting on the chew, and we will enjoy those in the coming days/nights.
Anyone looking to get onto them here will find very little beach formations and you may need to move around, but we simply walked down from the car and got onto them . Fishing IS allowed in NSW as ' gentle exercise' as long as you observe social distancing. ( so you cram everyone in the car, then scatter once there  ::))

Cheers,
Red

Nice work Red, hopefully when these crazy times are over there will still be some tailor on the beach.

I think I'll give this fishing a miss for a bit...driving a QLD reg'd car in NSW draws the flies too much. I get asked what I'm doing, where I'm going (even with rods on the roof)....everywhere I go.
I find it funny to have two coppers sitting elbow to elbow ( or in this case, *bad word* cheek to *bad word* cheek) in their car ask me where I'm going with kids in the car, then insist we spread out once at the beach.... ::)
    Maybe it's jealousy?

    Hi Red,
Yeah I seen a few cars in Beenleigh yesterday with NSW plates pulled over by police and checking everything on it, then again might have been a targeted car for drugs or similar.

Yeah marvellous hey, coppers don't follow the Govt advice , their bad if they contract coronavirus. What's the motto, "Do as I say not do what I do".

Reports from a cousin at Patch's Beach say good tailor and big seabream among them on the beach at night. They live there, so just walk down to the sand. ( What a place to have to self-isolate)
Still a few loonies in 4wd's on the beach day and night, but it is being monitored in person and fixed cameras.

There's always loonies and hoons always pushing the limit.

Hmmm, sounds like it might be a good tailor session down there , always another time next year for me. I missed out getting good leather jacket from that area couple years ago. Had all the rigs made, old mate down at Ballina went back overseas, that was the end of that.

There's some real redneck locals here too....if you drive a QLD reg'd car , you stand to have some vandalism if you leave it at the beach unattended. Sadly, I've seen some nasty letters left on windscreens about staying home, etc , and some horrible carvings into paintwork.
I leave my Qld car at home and drive a locally reg'd P.O.S. for this reason.

I'd love to catch those mongrels in the act, guarantee they wont be vandalising again. Saudi Arabia they cut the vandals hands off.

This aint Saudi Arabia, and when you're the only Qld'r surrounded by Cockroaches that doesn't work so well. No sympathy there I'm afraid. They don;t want you taking 'their' fish and 'infecting the place'.
People are scared, doing stupid things, in time they'll never admit to this kind of behaviour, but it's human (stupid) Nature.

    LOL,

NSW does have bit bluer coloured waters compared to SEQld waters. I used to do a lot of spearfishing and abalone eating down south. I remember one species of fish that just sits on the rocks with camo coloured scales. I called them Joe Cocky, they look at you when you got the speargun aimed at them, then at the last minute second they move, bummer. Back up for air and try a different tactic. Bizarre fish but good chewing.

I reckon be a lot of sea mullet coming through soon and tailor.

Green parrots are back and first cold snap is starting tonight.
The 1st mullet runs will be due for sure.
The cheap mullet fillets will mean buying a few boxes.

Cheaper and better tasting than that imported Basa muck.
Supporting Aussie fisherman is even better

I wish I sill had my Master Fisher licence then I can go NSW and get some fish, except mine was for Commonwealth Waters, not State Waters. I let mine lapse many years ago. I use to get whole mullet cheap at Chinderah Processing Plant.

    G'day Mamoth,

Not much, back then in 1993 I attended Gateway TAFE and undertook a course and examination that was under the Queensland Fishing Industry Council.

You had to successfully complete and pass Net and Gear Technology.
    Small  Business Principles
    Seafood Handling
    Fishing Industry Environment
    Fisheries Legislation

This was in accordance with requirements for a Master Fisherman's Licence.

I had a licence that covered Commonwealth Waters.

As far as I was ware, back then it meant you was the person who holds the licence and others could work for you or under your control.

Most likely it would have changed over the years. Renaming and Politics I'm sure.

Commercial would be akin to Master's but whether the courses or elements of the courses might be structured differently over time.

Hope this helps you a bit of insight.
