Xmas crabs all sorted
« on: Thu 20 Dec 11:58 2018 »
Hi,

As there was a window of light winds this morning we decided to do a spanner crab trip instead of chasing muddies.

Had the pots in just before daylight and home by 10.30 with the bag limit for 2 people. Threw a lot of under size ones back.

Fisheries came up to us in the car park driving an unmarked 4WD and measured and counted the catch, checked the flares. life jackets and EPIRB for the exp date. All good on every count.

They said there was a reasonable amount of sandies about but the mud crabs were scare.

Cheers,

Ross

Good effort Rosco, at least you and your friend managed a feed of spanners before the closure comes in.

Water Police were checking a few fishos near one of the prawn farms in the Logan River today, about 9.00am.

    Cheers

    Hi Bondy,

The crab closure is behind us now. This year it was 1/11/18 until 15/12/18.

After the fisheries checked us they drove down into the boat trailer park area and parked up so i guess would have checked any boaties  pulling their boats out.

    Cheers,

    Ross

    Hi,

First lot out of the cooker. No different in colour to their live colour.

    Cheers,

    Hi Steve,

You would find a difference, similar texture but they have their own flavour. Any crab is good to eat.

    Cheers,

    Ross

    G'day Rosco,

I was not aware of the change of closure dates for spanners, time for me to get a new set of regs, going to get a hardcopy as opposed to electronic version.

Been awhile since I've been targeting spanners, yes, they do have their own flavour and sweeter than sandies / blue swimmers.

Few years ago I purchased some spanners from Brunswick Heads Seafood Market. Big mistake for me, I paid a lot only to get 3 spanners that were very watery, meat was off, ended up throwing it in the sea. I never brought one again, catch one's own is a lot better.

    Cheers,
    Bondy

    Hi Bondy,

The extended closure only came in this year. Previously it was from 20th November to 20th December which made the window to target them for a xmas feed very small giving the chance of windy weather but this year ending on the 15th gives you just over a week before xmas and a better chance to at least get a day in to target them.

    Cheers,

    Ross
