When to pick mangoes?
« on: Wed 23 Dec 14:16 2009 »
I planted a grafted mango tree some twenty years or so ago. It was supposed to fruit within a couple of years except the graft section died. I paid the tree little attention over the years other than to put the occassional grass clippings round it to mulch etc. It has had a few puny mangoes on it in the past but nothing worth worrying about. Anyways, this year for some reason it has decided to produce a crop of good looking mangoes and I am not sure when is the best time to pick them so they don't fall on the ground or get eaten by the local flying fox population. Can anyone give me some clues as to when I should start removing them from the tree? Cheers

Just feel them chris! they are real firm while on the tree but when they get close to ripening they become a bit softer and get a yellow  or redish shade to them!  The mango tree responds well to pruning as well, if its too high just hack the tops off all the tree and it will grow shorter and stumpy but still give great sized mango's that will be easier to harvest and be too low for the bats to get at!

G'day Mate
I'm pretty sure you can pick them green also. Just sit them on the kitchen bench out of direct sunlight and they should ripen in a few days
