I've always had problems storing open silicone, you know how it goes you grab a tube for a small job on the boat or kayak, then the fun starts as you try and plug the open tube with a screw, or one of those red plastic corkscrew things they sell to do the job, gave those a go no joy! Tried cling film, tape, blue tack, foil, etc.etc. Then had a "light bulb moment"  it's the air and moisture that sets the stuff off right? So I filled a throwaway plastic cup half way with oil and stuck the tube into it.  (got to wedge it some where to stop it falling over) an yep it does the job, had a tube on the go on and off for about 9 months now, so eat your hearts out silicone manufacturers I'll only be buying one tube a year instead of 10! :)

It always amazed me that silicone wont seal itself

The trick i use is when you open the tube put a little silicone around the base of the nozzle and screw it on, stopps the air getting in the bottom when your done using it sqeeze a little out and seal the top of nozzle making sure there is a bit poking out

Creates its own plug

Just my way because i use a lot of sica and its $16 a tube

Nothing lasts forever , and seeing as most silicons are only $5 I don't bother too much on keeping them mate.

Sikaflex is a bit more than 5 bucks and it is also the convenience of having it there when you need it.

Yep, my freezer has a number of different silicon/sika tubes in it. The wife whinged at first but once I pointed out how much Sika is a tube she cleared a spot for it.

Just got your hint regarding moisture a few weeks ago, so I decided to seal the tube with the tapered end with thick grease at the tube where it fits on, and at the end with a screw and grease....the result? The silicone is ready to use right after you remove the greased screw.....as good as first opened...three weeks so far. OK now get those silicon sealnts out of the fridge and back in the workshop where it belongs...some guys will do anything to upset the wife. No wonder there is family violence whe nthe fish tastes like silicon.....( :D

Like Ray says, just put it in the beer fridge,
    lasts forever.

Some silicones requires moisture to cure.

I understand the annoyance of a tube being wasted these days as don't use it everyday anymore thank goodness.
Doing showers and glass shopfronts and sealing alumium joinery I have done more than my life time quota.
    Interesting the idea with grease.

I see Bunnings now sell 1/3 tube size but costs same as standard size in cheap product

It works and its simpler than using the beer fridge....you can take it with you...
I seldom use the silicon and its moisture proof....and gets you browny points when you tell your boss....
